When I was growing up in Fairfield in the 70’s, there was a woman who lived down the street from me. Every spring she would gather all the neighborhood kids, hand out trash bags, rakes and trowels and organize a clean sweep of the sidewalks, roads and public garden beds. It was her way of beautifying the neighborhood, teaching us to appreciate our environment and helping us learn to be stewards of the earth. I remember the sense of accomplishment at the end of the day and the lessons I learned have not been forgotten.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. Fairfield will be celebrating on Saturday, April 25th, from 10am-4pm, at Fairfield Warde High School. There will be food, games, activities, recycling, exhibitors, and vendors. My boys will be there again this year selling Square Foot Gardens so make sure you stop by and say hello.
