Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead before you go to bed on Saturday night. Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 am. As you circle the house setting your clocks, take a moment to do a quick safety check.
- Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If you do not have carbon monoxide detectors, now would be a good time to get them installed. Effective January 1, 2014, the State of Connecticut now requires that all one and two family homes built prior to October 1, 2005 have both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors prior to property title transfer. (CT Public Act No. 13-272)
- While you have your stepladder out, check light fixtures and replace light bulbs. Swapping them out for energy efficient bulbs can save on your electricity costs.
- Check the medicine cabinet and emergency first aid kit. Replace any expired medications.
- Review your family emergency plan. Check the batteries in your flashlights.
- Check/replace your fire extinguisher.
- Replace furnace filters. Replace refrigerator water filters.
- Check appliance hoses on refrigerator, washer, dryer and dishwasher. Make sure there is no crimping, cracking or other damage to the supply/discharges hoses and vents. Make sure that your dryer vent is free of lint.
- Check you sump pump (if you have one) and ensure it is working properly prior to snow melt and spring showers.
- Check your food pantry and refrigerator. Toss any expired food items.
